FRANSKHELLEREN AT DRYNA (The French Cave) 4-500 m from the Dryna ferry terminal. The name derives from the French prisoners-of-war who escaped from the Germans and lived here in secrecy during the winter of 1944/45. The grotto provides a striking view over the Atlantic and numerous islands

BJØRNEREMSHELLEREN (The Bjørnerem Caves) on Midøya. 200m from the main road, RV668. Bjørnsund. Idyllic, old fishing village. Uninhabited. The very first people in Romsdal are thought to have lived in these caves. Archaeological remains show that the site was good for hunting and fishing. Amongst the findings was the skeleton of a bear - hence the name Bjørnerem. (Bjørn = bear.)

ONA Is a small unique fishing community located on the farthest island from the Atlantic coast, founded in the days when it was a necessity to live as close to one's livelihood as possible. In 1670 an enormous tidal wave flooded the island, taking with it many people and houses. The lighthouse of Ona is a well known landmark. Ceramic workshops are found here. How to get there: by coach or car via ferry route 31, then 10 min. drive across the island of Gossen to Småge and by ferry route 32. THE ROKTA MONUMENT on Rindarøya, the northernmost point of Aukra, gives a magnificent view of the islands towards the Atlantic. From here one can see the Galleskjærene (skerries) where the freighter «Rockta» was wrecked in a hurricane in 1938. The monument (1991) which is in memory of the rescue operation, is by Nicolaus Widerberg.

THE WAR MEMORIAL COLLECTION AT GOSSEN a unique collection of objects, photographs and other documentation from WW II. Models of the airport give a good picture of the situation during the war. THE AIRFIELD AT AUKRA was built by the Germans, using prisoners-of-war during WW II, in preparation for an allied counter-invasion. They solved the problem of marshland by removing the bog with high pressure jets. Parachute enthusiasts gather here every Sunday.

LØVIKREMMA, a branch of the Romsdal Museum, is a working farm located on the island of Gossen, 16 km west of Molde. Here one can relieve traditional Romsdal coastal agriculture with a range of animals including sheep, goats, hens, horses, cows and pigs. THE FISHING VILLAGE OF BJØRNSUND Deserted fishing community in idyllic surroundings. Bjørnsund can be seen from Bud and reached by boat from Harøysund. Around 1900 there where 5-600 people living here. The houses practically cling to the rocks, and their closeness to one another give them mutual shelter. Today a popular outdoor pursuits canter. THE FISHING VILLAGE OF BUD During the 16th and 17th centuries this distinctive fishing community was the largest trading post between Bergen and Trondheim. Today it is still active in the fishing industry. The last National Congress in Norway was held at Bud (1533 AD).

THE COSTAL FORT OF ERGAN. A restored German subterranean fort from WW II. Includes command headquarters, cannons and a hospital ward. Exhibition of local war memories.See opening hours here. BUD CHURCH is a cruciform church from 1717. During WW II the dome was found to be in the German line of fire and was subsequently taken down. Now restored.See opening hours here.

THE ATLANTIC OCEAN ROAD takes you over 8 bridges from islet to islet out to the very point where the land ends and the ocean begins. Hustadvika, an infamous stretch of ocean, is an unforgettable experience whatever the weather. There is excellent fishing and scuba-divers from all over the world gather here. A drive on the Atlantic road is a must it is one of Norway's most exciting stretches of road, leading over bridges and islands and out towards the ocean. A route not to be missed: Molde-Elnesvågen-Bud-Vevang-Avery-Kristiansund.

THE FISHING VILLAGE OF HÅHOLMEN See web-camera! The adventurer Ragnar Thorseth's fishing community from the 18th century. Original wharfs, fishermen's cottages and a bakery from the 18th and 19th centuries. Vikingship exhibition.

BREMSNESHATTEN In this mountain lies the Bremsneshola grotto which extends approx.. 70 m. into the mountain. Remains of the first settlement in Norway, the Fosna-Culture, have been discovered here.

KVERNES STAVE CHURCH among the youngest stave churches from the 13th century. One of Norway's best preserved stave churches with beautiful and unusual interior.See opening hours here.

THE OLD MUSEUM OF KVERNES 11 old buildings with various implements and tools from earlier times. Farmhouses, smithy, mill and boathouses. 29th of July: St. Olaf's celebration. See opening hours here.

SKARET LEISURE PARK The most popular regional leisure destination during both summer and winter. Marked, easy walking-paths, more demanding hikes, orienteering, canoe paddling, cycling, fishing, children's playground an outdoor swimming pool. At Skaret tourist center you can hire rowing boats, canoes and fishing tackle.

TROLLKIRKA (The Troll Church) 3 exciting limestone grottoes, approx. 380 m above sea level, with subterranean streams and a 14 m waterfall. A fascinating experience! How to get there: 20 km from Molde on road RV64. From a marked car park about 1hr and 30min fairly strenuous walk. Boots and lamps are essential.

ASLAKSTEINEN One of several naturally formed flat-topped mounds on the Hustad marshes. 200 m high, it was used as the village fortress, a safe place during turbulent times. Numerous archaeological findings. 30 min. walk.

TROLLPILA (The Troll Arrow) 5m tall stone monument at Bolsøya, an island connected to the mainland by a tunnel (road RV64). The monument dates from pre-Christian times and is thought to have been a part of a collection of monuments. According to the legend, the stone was thrown by an old Trollwoman who disliked King Olaf's plans for a church at the site.

ROCK CARVINGS AT SØBSTAD Probably from the late Stone Age. They were made on a southerly, vertical cliff near the sea. The figures resemble a dolphin, birds and hunting tools. Info: Tourist Information Office, Averøy tel. +47 71 51 35 00 Fax +47 71 51 35 99

MIDSUND - THE OLD FRONTIER A small stone monument marking the mid-17th century between Sweden and Denmark/Norway. Signs by the RV668 at Midøya. Info: Tourist Information, Midsund: tel. +47 71 27 91 20

THE MILLHOUSE AT HEGGDALSVIKA Restored millhouse from the 1880s. Well marked by the county road 202 in Sør-Heggdal at Otrøya. Info: Tourist Information Office or at the grocery store. Tel +47 71 27 91 20

THE NESSET PRESTEGÅRD This rectory was the childhood home of author Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson (1832-1910). He wrote: «Romsdalen is the small part of the world I love the most. Here I evolved. Of this way of life and these people am I marked.» Bjrønson received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1903. The museum at the rectory is open during the summer season.

THE ROCK CARVINGS AT BOGGESTRANDA Date from a time when people lived from hunting and fishing. They are possibly records of valuable hunting grounds and large herds of game, carved onto the mountain during the Stone Age. The carvings can be found in three separate locations and the oldest dates back over 4000 years.

THE MARDALSFOSSEN WATERFALL Is to be found in the Eikesdal valley and boasts Northern Europe's highest free-falling waterfall at 297 meters. The Mardøla river is still an impressive sight when the reservoirs are emptied between 20th June and 20th august. There is a 45-minute walk from the parking in Mardalen.

THE AURSJØVEIEN (FINNSETLIA) ROAD Starts in Finnset in Eikesdal. The narrow, winding road continues alongside the Aursjø dam (862 m above sea level) and runs down the Litledalen valley to Sunndalsøra. The road offers many magnificent views, and is a good starting point for walking trips in the mountains. Tollroad, open from mid-June.

ERIKLIA ACTIVITY FARM Has the world's largest herd of Nordland-/Lyng-horses (approximately 60 head) which is one of Norway's national horse breeds and one of the rarest in the world. The activity farm has roughly 250 animals, divided between fifteen different species.

GAUSETVÅGEN NATURE RESERVE AND WETLAND AREA This nationally protected area has an international diploma and carries the status of protected wetland and nature reserve for various birds, amongst others Whooper swans

MOLDE (23.000 inhabitants.) Molde is beautiful situated by the Romsdalsfjord. The «Town of Roses» also has various educational facilities as well as offering many cultural activities, including an international literature festival and the famous annual Molde International Jazz Festival

KONGEBJØRKA (The King's Birch) at Glomstua is the tree under which King Haakon and Crown Prince Olav sheltered during the German bombing of Molde in April 1940. Two-thirds of the town was destroyed in these attacks. A monument in commemoration of those dramatic days was unveiled in1955.

ROMSDALSMUSEET (The Romsdal Museum) is amongst Norway's largest regional museums, founded in 1912. An open air museum, it has 40 houses which are furnished and equipped according to their respective ages. Gathered in idyllic courtyards they show the development of the farmer's culture from the 14th to the 20th century. Occasional performances by the children's folk dance group. FISKERIMUSEET (The Fisheries Museum) is a unique open air museum located on the island of Hjertøya. 10 min. from the center of Molde. A small fishing village with authentic buildings, boats and fishing equipment, the museum shows local coastal culture from 1850 onwards. Recreational area and bathing. See opening hours here.

REKNESPARKEN (The Reknes Park) offers a good view of parts the Molde panorama (222 mountain peaks). The view is immortalized in Henrik Ibsen's play «The Lady from the Sea».

THE MOLDE CATHEDRAL Architect Finn Bryn, 1957. The cathedral has an impressive nave (900 seats) and it is beautifully decorated. The alter-piece was painted by Stinius Fredriksen. The old alter-piece «Resurrection» by Axel Ender is from the church which was bombed in April 1940. See opening hours here.

MOLDE TOWN HALL A prize-winning design in concrete and glass by architects Cappelen and Rodahl, 1966. The statue «The Rose Maiden» with her fountain is a celebration of Molde as the «Town of Roses».

MOLDE ESTATE. Beautiful rococo building from 1710. Setting for Henrik Ibsen's "Rosmersholm".

MOLDEGÅRD A beautiful rococo building from 1710 which is said to be the scene of Henrik Ibsen's play «Rosmersholm». Privately owned. Can be admired from the road.

THE VARDEN VIEWPOINT 407 m above the town. An unparalleled and magnificent view: Molde lies at the foot of the hill, facing a fjord which opens out to the famous Molde-panorama. A panorama of 222 partly snow-covered mountain peaks! To the west one can see the majestic Atlantic Ocean. Restaurant «Vardestua». MOLDE STADION Experience the grandest stadium in Europe! Financed by Røkke an Gjelsten, two local finance men. Opened April 18th 1998. Architect Kjell Kosberg. TINGVOLL which has Nordmøre's oldest church, known as Nordmøresdomen (Nordmøre Cathedral) is believed to date from the 12th century and is well preserved granite and brick structure surrounded by a stone wall with an arched entrance way.

THE PETROGLYPHS at Boggestrands are in three different fields. The oldest are approximately 4000 years old.
